River City Project

The River City Project aims to integrate sustainability across curriculum. As a signatory of the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment, the University is committed to making climate neutrality and sustainability a part of the curriculum and educational experience for all students. This project helps provide the faculty development resources necessary to meet this goal.

The "River City Project" name reflects a goal to have participants link their courses to the unique geographical and environmental features of Richmond and Virginia. The concept was inspired by a network of universities that have established similar programs, starting with the Piedmont Project at Emory University and the Ponderosa Project at Northern Arizona University.

This year the Office for Sustainability will host three faculty discussions on core concepts of sustainability, sustainability competencies, and successful pedagogies. These workshops will be interactive and focused on adapting current coursework.

The first discussion, Competencies for Sustainability Education, will take place on August 3 and will focus on helping participants develop a set of shared learning outcomes and key competencies to clarify what it means for students to be sustainability literate.

During the summer of 2017, faculty will be invited to attend a two day course focused on revising syllabi, in which participants will be guided through the process of linking the ideas from the workshops to a course they teach. Incorporating core sustainability concepts and competencies into courses can help transform our students' understanding of sustainability and support their ability to apply sustainable practices to their areas of study.
